Obituary of George Russell Mason

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Russell Mason, 73, of Abercrombie (formerly of Coalburn,) passed away on March 21, 2024 after a short stay in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital. Born on October 14, 1950 in New Glasgow, he was the son of Grant and Sadie (Smith) Mason. George worked for Scotsburn Dairy in Stellarton for 35 years. He began his career doing home deliveries, and then became Warehouse Supervisor – a job title he held for most of his time there. He finished his career driving a tandem truck hauling milk from various farms in Pictou County before his retirement in 2010. While George’s job often had him working early and staying late, he always made time for family. Spending time with his family was his greatest joy. George especially loved being outdoors – family camping trips, weekends at the camp with his brothers, and fishing with Daryl – his best friend of 60 years. He was a skilled woodworker, he enjoyed reading and watching old westerns, but he particularly loved spending time with his two cherished grandchildren. George loved to attend the music and sporting events of his children and grandchildren and he could always be counted on to lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbours. George is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jane (MacDonald) Mason of Abercrombie. He was a loving father to daughter Angela (Keir) Campbell of Haliburton; son Adam Mason (Heather Maddigan) of Valley and daughter Ashley Mason (Luke Snyder) of Trenton. He was the best Grampie to Kaleigh and Owen Campbell. He will be dearly missed by best friend Daryl Allard as well as his siblings: Marion (Carl), Thelma, Linda, Wayne (Cathy), Carol, Stan (Bonnie), Dave (Barb), Sheila, Neil (June), Kenny (Elaine), Sandra, sister in law Eunice, brother in law Barry (Elizabeth), and numerous nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents, Grant and Sadie Mason; brothers Brenton, Warren, Raymond and Walter and in-laws Sally, Glen and Dick. Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home in New Glasgow on Sunday March 24, 2024. Visitation will be from 1:00pm-4:00pm and the Funeral Service will be at 4:30pm. A graveside committal service for family and friends will be held after the funeral at the Abercrombie Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Abercrombie Fire Hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in George’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital.
